BCPS Programs In the Community.....
Connecting released Ex-Offenders to our Community, to People and Agencies who can help.
The first few weeks and months following an inmate's release from jail are the most crucial. Studies have shown that over half will be re-arrested, perpetuating the cycle of violence and crime. Meeting basic needs like a fair-wage job, adequate housing, drug and alcohol counseling and treatment and positive relationships and role models can make a meaningful difference and help the ex-offender succeed.
BerksConnections begins the process in jail. In a pilot program begun in 2004, BCPS staff conducts a Needs Assessment Interview, gauging post-release needs in key areas like education, employment, housing, drug/alcohol/mental health and other medical issues and family/social arrangements. This assessment has clearly defined post-release needs: 74% of inmates will have no job, 56% have not graduated high school, and over 20% have no stable post-release housing.
BerksConnections is a founding member of the Berks Community Resources Network, a group of non-profit social service and government agencies that work with individuals involved in the Berks County criminal justice and juvenile justice systems. The Community Resources Network shares information, ideas and strategies between government and community-based agencies, maximizing resources and identifying gaps in services.
BerksConnections publishes a members’ Guide to Services, and can provide ex-offenders with referrals and information about
- Housing
- Employment
- Drug, Alcohol and Mental Health Counseling and Treatment
- Education and Literacy
As Berks County implements a Community Corrections Strategy -- with a new Community Corrections Center scheduled to open on July 1, 2007 -- BCPS/BerksConnections serves on the Berks County Commissioners Community Corrections Task Force and prepares to be at the center of coordinating community-based programming for CCC residents both pre- and post-release.
SUPPORT FOR FAMILY AND FRIENDS
BCPS/Berks Connections has created a support group for individuals trying to cope with the incarceration of a loved one. Family and Friends Coping with Incarceration (FFCI) has been established for individuals, 16 years of age or older, who have a loved one that is, or has been, incarcerated in the adult or juvenile justice system. It is designed to provide mutual support in a non-judgmental, confidential environment. Members will have a safe place to discuss with and listen to others who are struggling with similar issues. FFCI will additionally provide education to the group about pertinent criminal justice topics through the invitation of guest speakers.
FFCI meets on the first and third Thursdays of each month from 7:00 – 9:00 PM in the Flame Room at UGI located on Route 10. If you need directions, or would like additional information, please contact Christine or Kim at (610) 478-6920.
